04.13.04 (9:00 am) [edit]
I had a second interview for a branch manager position last Thursday and I still don't know what to think. I haven't been offered the position yet and I'm not sure that it will be offered, but if they do offer it to me, I really don't know if I want it or not and I'm not really sure how to go about resolving that. In some ways, I'd be happier if they didn't offer me the job because then I wouldn't have to make a decision.
Let me back up a second here. In the past when I've gone for job interviews I usually didn't already have a job and so the decision was pretty easy. It pretty much went like this: I don't have a job, I'm being offered a job, no matter how bad it is it's still a paycheck for as long as I decide to stay and in the meantime I can keep looking. During this time, I was pretty much being supported by my parents and so if the job was really bad, I could quit and I'd still have a roof over my head.
Now, I have a job and while I'd really like to find a job that I was happier in, I pretty much know what to expect. I love being a librarian and most days are pretty good. I know that they could be better, but the majority of the time it isn't that bad. Keeping my present job also means that I don't have to move and while the apartment I have now is no palace, I still don't have to pack up everything I own and pay for movers.
The advantages of the job are: 1. More money -- about $7000 2. Supervisory experience 3. A good library system 4. It would get me out of where I am now
The disadvantages: 1. Have to move 2. I might spend the majority of my time managing and very little time being a librarian -- not sure I like that idea. 3. Haven't met any of the employees who would be working under me so I have no sense of how well I'd fit in. 4. Not really sure that I fit in with the culture 5. I'd pretty much be stuck there for a year or longer even if I didn't like it 6. I'd kind of like to see what else is out there 7. I'd really like to move to another area of the country and this ain't it.
That doesn't help!!!!!! There are a few other opportunities that I'd like to pursue and obviously I can't do that if I accept this position and despite how they've dragged their heels with the interview process, I get the feeling they will be making a decision pretty quicly.

Going to keep this short because I have to get out of here and go to work. I'd rather stay here, but I've got to pay the bills somehow. :) PLA was fabulous. I'll try to write up the highlights by the end of the week. I've been so busy since I got back and I have a job interview tomorrow, my birthday is Thursday, and I think the only way I'll catch up at work is if I can find a way to freeze time. Hope you've all been well.

I tried to add a subtitle to my blog and didn't have enough room. Made me sad. Of course it's been the kind of day when just about everything has made me sad.
Anyway, my subtitle is..... Life, Libraries and the pursuit of a good book.
You read it here first.

Going International
02.11.04 (6:01 am) [edit]
I'm not sure how I got hooked on British Chick Lit, but it happened. There are definitely days when I wish it hadn't as I spend way too much time trying to hunt things down at a reasonable price on ebay. Not to mention the frustration when someone comes in looking for a good book to read and I think of the perfect book only to remember that it's not available stateside.
In the last few days I've noticed that for certain books at Amazon UK, they are listing the US List Price, then the UK equivalent, and then the price they're selling the book for. It makes me think that they've begun to import some US books that otherwise wouldn't be available. I haven't seen the same thing thus far at Amazon in the US. Don't they realize what a moneymaker this would be? I've seen UK books go for outrageous prices on ebay.
I wish I knew a bit more about the international publishing world, as well. Some of my favorite British authors are starting to be published here, but others aren't. I wish I knew how they made those decisions. I can't believe that Jill Mansell hasn't (so far) been published here. She's a bestselling author in the UK and her books are hysterical. The plots are always a bit over the top, but somehow it works for her.

Tired
02.09.04 (8:56 pm) [edit]
|
So tired tonight, but I don't feel like sleeping. Busy day at the library with the typical February assignment. Haven't the teachers figured out by now that by the second week of February there are no more biographies left in the library, especially biographies of African Americans. Would it be so terrible to do biographies in November instead of February for a change?

There are no good books
02.08.04 (10:17 am) [edit]

why, WHY, WHY is it so hard to find a good book to read? I'm a librarian, so I should never run out of stuff to read, right? I guess the real problem isn't in finding stuff to read, but in finding good stuff to read. And it's not even in finding good stuff because I have lots of things around the house that at one point I thought I'd like to read and I have a list of things I'd like to read from my library. The problem is in finding something good that I'd like to read now. The book that's just come in from ILL and the book that I bought at Christmas are things I wanted to read when I ordered them and will probably want to read some time in the future, but where's the book I want to read now?
